Homeless In NYC

I was walking back from work on my way to my hotel tonight when I had a heart warming experience. On 8th Ave right before 54th there was a young woman on the street asking for groceries. I saw people passing by so I stopped and gave her $1.
She walked away then came back quickly. She said, I want food, not money- she handed the bill back to me and walked away. I stopped for a moment, then went to her and asked her, "what do you want"? She said she needed food. We were right across from a health food store so I said I would buy her some groceries, she asked to go in with me. Well, it turns out, she wanted to pick out her own food. As we walked around she said, in a very quite voice, "basic food should be available to people". She asked respectfully with each item if it would be too much money. At one point she filled a bag with raw cashews. It was not on purpose, you know how those lever things work, all of the sudden the bag was full. She said this is going to be $20 are you sure it's ok? She was right, it was $19.68.
